From City to Nodo: Balenciaga’s Soft Bag Evolution

Balenciaga’s Spring 2027 collection introduced two new bag silhouettes under Pierpaolo Piccioli: the Nodo and the Silhou Tote. Made in supple leather and shaped through draping, both designs reflect a softer and more organic direction for the house.

They are not direct updates of the Balenciaga City. However, their relaxed construction brings renewed attention to a design language the vintage City helped establish more than two decades ago: a luxury bag does not need to be rigid or pristine to feel distinctive.

The Vintage City Made Softness a Design Statement

Introduced during Nicolas Ghesquière’s era at Balenciaga, the original Motorcycle and City bags stood apart from the structured handbags that dominated luxury fashion in the early 2000s.

Soft leather allowed the bag to collapse naturally around the body. Braided handles, long zipper pulls, buckles and studs gave the design character without relying on prominent logos.

The City was not designed to remain perfectly shaped. Its creases, softened corners and changing leather became part of how the bag was worn.

Why Vintage City Bags Feel Individual

Two vintage City bags in the same size can look noticeably different. Leather texture, colour, hardware, age and previous use all influence the final appearance.

Some examples retain a relatively defined shape, while others develop a deeper slouch. Dark colours may soften or reveal different undertones, and hardware can acquire a more muted finish over time.

These variations are part of the appeal, although condition still matters. Natural softening and patina are different from deep cracking, broken stitching or structural damage.

The City Becomes Couture

For Balenciaga’s Fall 2026 Couture collection, Pierpaolo Piccioli transformed the familiar City silhouette through shiny silver metal and rose-gold crystal mesh.

The couture versions retained the recognisable shape while replacing the City’s everyday leather with highly decorative surfaces. It demonstrated how the same silhouette could move from an informal, lived-in bag to an object closer to jewellery.

This was not simply another City reissue. It placed one of Balenciaga’s most familiar accessories inside the house’s couture conversation.

Spring 2027: The Nodo and Silhou Tote

Piccioli continued exploring softness in Spring 2027 through the new Nodo and Silhou Tote.

The Nodo is a relaxed hobo shape defined by a knotted detail, while the Silhou Tote uses leather that appears folded and draped rather than held within a rigid frame. Both place emphasis on material, movement and the human hand.

The newer bags have their own identities, but they share an important quality with the vintage City: softness is treated as part of the design rather than a loss of structure.

Why the Vintage City Still Matters

The arrival of the Nodo and Silhou Tote suggests that relaxed leather bags are not only a reference to Y2K nostalgia. Softness, movement and visible material character remain relevant to Balenciaga’s current direction.

For someone choosing a vintage City today, the best example is not necessarily the one that looks closest to new. The right choice depends on the balance of colour, leather texture, hardware, condition and slouch that appeals to you.
