Vintage Balenciaga City vs New Le City: What’s the Difference?
The Balenciaga City bag has returned to the centre of fashion conversation. First launched in 2001, the original City became known for its soft leather, relaxed shape and motorcycle-inspired hardware. Its naturally worn-in appearance made it different from the structured designer bags of the period.
In April 2024, Balenciaga officially reintroduced the design as Le City. The new version closely references the original while updating certain details for contemporary use.
So, how does a vintage Balenciaga City compare with the new Le City? The answer depends on the leather, construction and carrying experience you prefer.
What Has Stayed the Same?
The new Le City preserves the details that make the bag recognisable: braided handles, buckled corners, studded hardware, leather tassel zip pulls and a relaxed rectangular silhouette.
Balenciaga studied several archival City bags when recreating the design. According to the house, the new version uses a hand-assembled 25-panel construction that reflects the structure of vintage examples.
From a distance, the two versions share the same visual identity. The differences become clearer when looking at the leather, shape, strap and signs of age.
Leather and Slouch
Vintage City bags are valued for their individual leather. Depending on the production period, they may be made from lambskin or goatskin with varying levels of grain, softness and distressing.
Years of use can make the leather softer and create a more pronounced slouch. Colour may also develop differently across the body, handles and corners. As a result, two vintage City bags from similar periods can still feel noticeably different.
The new Le City is currently available in materials including Arena lambskin, textured leather, denim and metallic finishes. A new bag offers a cleaner and more consistent appearance, although Balenciaga notes that its leather can also develop marks and patina over time.
Choose vintage if you enjoy softness, natural ageing and variation. Choose new if you prefer an unworn finish and more predictable condition.
Structure and Proportions
The classic Medium City and the new Medium Le City have very similar overall proportions. Balenciaga lists the current Medium at approximately 38.5 × 24 × 15 cm.
However, age affects how a vintage bag holds its shape. A well-used City may appear flatter or more relaxed when empty, while a newer Le City is likely to look more defined at first.
Measurements can also vary slightly across vintage seasons, so buyers should always check the dimensions of the individual bag rather than relying only on the model name.
Straps and Carrying Options
Both versions offer top handles and a removable shoulder strap, but their carrying experience may differ.
Many vintage City straps are relatively short and may work better on the shoulder than crossbody. Strap length and flexibility can vary depending on the year and condition.
The current Medium Le City includes an adjustable and removable shoulder strap, while the Small version is designed with longer crossbody wear in mind. This may make the newer design more adaptable for buyers who prefer different carrying options.
Condition and Individual Character

With a vintage City, condition is part of the decision. Check the corners, handles, tassels, mirror, strap, interior and hardware. Softening and fading may add character, while dryness, cracking or weakened stitching can affect future wear.
A new Le City removes much of this uncertainty and includes the experience of purchasing a new-season bag. However, it will not immediately have the softened shape or individual patina associated with an older City.
Which Version Is Right for You?
Choose a vintage Balenciaga City if you value archive character, naturally softened leather and the possibility of finding discontinued colours or hardware combinations. Vintage may also offer a more accessible entry point, although pricing varies with age, rarity and condition.
Choose the new Le City if you prefer a pristine bag, adjustable carrying options and the ability to select directly from current sizes and colours.
Neither version is automatically better. The right choice depends on whether you want a bag that already carries its history or one that will develop its character through your own use.
