The Chloé Paddington: Before It Came Back, It Was Already a Legend

In 2005, a bag appeared on the Chloé Spring runway that stopped the fashion world in its tracks. No significant logo. No flashy monogram. Just a slouchy silhouette in supple buffalo leather, a pair of short rounded handles, and a heavy brass padlock front and centre. That was the Paddington — and nothing has quite been the same since.

Where It Started

The Paddington was the brainchild of Phoebe Philo, who served as Chloé's creative director from 2001 to 2006. Philo had a rare talent for designing bags that felt effortless rather than precious — pieces that moved with a woman rather than demanding to be carried carefully. The Paddington embodied exactly that.

Its debut on the SS2005 runway was quiet confidence at its finest. Within months, every one of the initial 8,000 units had sold out before hitting the shop floor. Waitlists stretched into the thousands. Sienna Miller, Kate Moss, and Lindsay Lohan were rarely seen without one. It became the defining It-bag of the mid-2000s — and Philo's greatest gift to the archives.

What Made It Different

Unlike its contemporaries — the logo-heavy Fendi Baguette, the Dior Saddle, the studded Balenciaga City — the Paddington's identity came from a single piece of hardware. That oversized brass padlock wasn't decorative. It was a statement. Heavy, tactile, and completely impractical in the best possible way, it became shorthand for a very specific kind of cool: understated, bohemian, and utterly confident.

Three Runways, One Icon

The Paddington has now appeared on the Chloé runway three times — and each time, it means something different.

SS2005 (Phoebe Philo): The original. Soft buffalo leather, rounded brass padlock, short equestrian-style handles. 8,000 units. All sold out before they hit stores.

FW2025 (Chemena Kamali): Twenty years later, Kamali — who began her career as an intern under Philo at Chloé — brought it back at Paris Fashion Week, with Alexa Chung carrying it down the runway. The reissue kept the original's slouchy soul but added a gold chain shoulder strap, a flatter geometric padlock, lighter hardware, a zip closure, and a fur pompom keychain charm.

FW2026 (Chemena Kamali): Kamali returned to the Paddington again, this time introducing an oversized maxi iteration — a bold evolution of the silhouette for the boho girl who wants to be seen. The vocabulary of the padlock continues to anchor Chloé's accessory identity under her direction.

Why the Original Still Wins

The Paddington carries something no reissue can replicate, the weight of a moment that hadn't been defined yet. That thick buffalo leather, that heavy rounded padlock, that specific shade of tan or chocolate — these are the details of a bag that shaped an era before anyone knew it was doing so.

At Why You Vintage, we try to source Paddingtons the ones that were there first. Each piece is selected for condition, authenticity, and that very specific something that makes a vintage bag worth owning.
